The Story

My name is Daniel Lee Miller.

I am a son. A brother. A friend.

I am a student. A designer. A photographer.

I enjoy looking at life through the view finder of my camera and capturing the moments that make life what it is, all captured at the varying speed of my shutter. I enjoy documenting life because it gives me a visual journal of where I’ve been, what I’ve done, and who I’ve done it with. The human mind, well ... at least the one I’ve been blessed with, seems to have a knack for forgetting; and when you forget, you lose a piece of who you are. Rather than attempting to tell you my story with just words and phrases, I prefer to show you through photography. Photography provides so much more detail to a story than I could ever express in simple dialogue alone. With camera in hand, my perception of people, objects, events, and time seem to alter to one that is constantly seeking alternate angles, different altitudes, and thinking about the perfect way to capture a scene and tell the details of its story. A good photograph tells a story and evokes emotion. It places the viewer at the scene and allows them to share that moment with the photographer. The viewer should be able to look at a photograph and smell the asphalt after a rain storm, hear the screams of sirens, taste the familiarity of the warm chocolate chip cookies.  In reality, there is so much more to seeing than sight itself.

I now find myself back in lovely Orange County, California after finishing up my thesis in Berkeley and having a cup of coffee in Bend, Oregon. In life and in geography things have come back full circle and I couldn't ask for much more.  Maybe it's naive, but with this education and the opportunities that still lie ahead of me I fully intend to change the world; maybe not the world in its entirety, but bits and pieces -- neighborhoods, communities and cities -- for the better.
